Reviews

The reviews for Foxes! have been really great so far. Here’s a round up of what people have been writing:

“Well crafted, self aware pop…occasionally they go nuts and wig out like The Coral or Captain Beefheart…it’s fantastic” – Artrocker Magazine  ****

“A world of winsome, delicately spiced indie pop…taken as a whole, the album’s lo-fi charm and mannered innocence is a winner” – Uncut Magazine  ***

“Don’t be put off by the twee coating there is more to these cunning canids than meets the eye. From surprisingly dark subject matter to the occasional foray into rockier territory Foxes! is the first truly post-twee album.” – The 405  7.5 / 10

“This self-titled debut is enchanting, full, as it is, of concatenate jangly indie waxed tales, and minor kitchen-sink dramas.” – God Is In The TV ****

“Trying to distil the history of indie into one album is cunning… worth hunting down.” – Daily Star  7 / 10

“Foxes! offer a breath of fresh air within the indie pop music spectrum, through their captivating rhythms and simplistic, yet infectious melodies.” – Sound Revolution  8 / 10

“It’s a superb album and a great start to the year. “ – Little Comments  8 / 10

“The stompers keep on coming, taking in such subjects as spending too long in cafés, days when you feel like you can’t do anything right and girl crushes.” – Brighton Music Blog

Foxes! has the essential elements of a great novel, the introduction intrigues and the whole album gathers pace and depth as the listener flows with the tracks” – Indie Bands Blog

“There’s gems on this album that will keep you warm now and keep you dancing through the summer.” – Who’s Jack ****

“These kids are too forthright not to be respected.” – The Line of Best Fit

“Few graces aside, Foxes! take almost every trick in the book and nauseatingly sugar dump them back out.” – This Is Fake DIY 4 / 10 (hmm can’t win ‘em all…)

Balcony Times Launches Today!

Our first release launches today. Congratulations to Milk & Biscuits whose tremendous debut Balcony Times has already been met with a great reception online, thanks to the luscious lead song “Rivers”. From today you can download the 25 minute mini LP from all good online retailers.

Matty and friends have also been fervently making a super limited edition CD package of the album. Only 100 copies are being made and so it’s a real collector’s piece! The first copies will be available on the shortly-to-be-properly launched shop soon. In the meantime, head to Resident Records in Brighton for the only currently available physical copies (sorry if that’s a long way!).

EDIT : The shop is now open!!! Click the SHOP tab on the top menu to place your order now!

In other M&B related news, the band are today’s New Band Of The Day on 405’s website. “Rivers” video is also viewing on NME Video Channel as well. In addition, you can read a short interview with Matty over on The Devil Wears The Best Tuna blog.

The full album is now streamable on Spotify so you can preview it now in full by following this link!

Tip: The cheapest I’ve seen the download is on Amazon MP3…it’s just £3.99 there so what are you waiting for?

Big Salad Update: November 2011

So the first month of the label is over and it’s been a busy time. The biggest announcement was made yesterday via This Is Fake DIY, and was that we will be releasing Foxes! self-titled debut album on 16th January 2012.

To celebrate this announcement, Kayla has helped make a new animation video for Oh Rosie, which we think is absolutely brilliant.

If you like the video, please share with friends on the usual social networking sites (and even by old fashioned word of mouth!), we’d really appreciate that.

The album will have the following tracklisting:

01. Aisle No. 3
02. The Panda Bear Song
03. 6 O’Clock
04. Welcome To The Jivin’
05. Oh Rosie
06. It’s Ridiculous, Adam
07. Alex Badamchi
08. Who Killed Rob?
09. A Letter To A Mine
10. Descartes
11. Art Girl
12. Apples To Apples

I can also reveal the album cover, also designed by Kayla’s fair hand and this appears at the top of the post.

For London based folk, Foxes! are also playing a show in on 16th December at Brixton’s Windmill. Check out their listings page for more information.

We are also approaching the release date for Milk & Biscuits mini-LP Balcony Times. We’ve had a great response to the lead track ‘Rivers’, which has featured on Song By Toad podcast and the first reviews have all been really positive. Thomas White recently made a suitably dreamy video for ‘Rivers’ as well which requires your attention:

In case you forgot, the album will be available from 5th December, through the Big Salad Records online shop and in selected independent shops and digitally through the usual channels.

Finally, a piece of combined Foxes! and Milk & Biscuits update. We are especially excited about our upcoming Christmas show, which will take place right on the eve of Christmas eve, (that’s the 23rd December of course), at The Green Door Store. I’m a big fan of the poster, yep again, made by Kayla. The Facebook event is here for further information

That wraps (Christmas) up our November update! Hope you are all well, don’t forget to join our Facebook and Twitter pages if you haven’t already.  Bye for now from the salad folk.

Introducing Milk & Biscuits

It’s with great pride and excitement that I would like to introduce Milk & Biscuits into the Big Salad crew. Matty and Max have been good pals for some time now and I’ve always enjoyed their skills in Restlesslist ever since they joined the band a while back. I’ve also had sneaky listens to their solo MySpace demoes over the past couple of years and always thought they had some more secret gems up their sleeves.

Turns out I was right as last Summer and Autumn the pair got together along with some likeminded musical friends in Matty’s loft to record the songs that will make up Balcony Times, their debut release on Big Salad Records. It’s a dreamy, relaxed affair, full of lush harmonies, languorous tempos and sunny moods that will raise your spirits and calm anxieties in equal measure.

There are also some fantastic guest appearances from other well known Brighton acts to be heard on the twenty-five minute mini-LP, including contributions from members of Brakes, Jenifer Left, Crown on Rats and BSR’s own Foxes!.

Matty is preparing some beautiful homemade CDRs for us, and there will be a limited number (100) available through the Big Salad Records shop, which is opening soon. The official release date for Balcony Times on CDR and digital download from all good online retailers is 5th December 2011.

You can have a listen to the gorgeous preview track “Rivers” now by clicking below.

Introducing Foxes!

It’s a new home for Foxes!, a fresh stream of information on the superhighway direct from Foxes! HQ into your bedroom (or on the train or bus or mountain if you have a smartphone, I like to play Angry Birds on the toilet). The days of everything coalescing on MySpace are over and our old website isn’t up-to-date with all the latest 2.0, 3.9 and 17.62 internet bells and whistles, hence this new beginning.

It’s also apt as we are about to enter a new phase of the band’s life. Very dramatic but I want to tantalize you with nearby announcements, the likes of which are lurking around anonymous street corners waiting to be bumped into by nefarious men in raincoats. Except lighter and fluffier than that.

We played our first show in a while at The Green Door Store on 29th July and I can now say to you in a clear happy voice that we will be back for a Christmas Spectacular there on Friday 23rd December! It’s a final big night out before you all head off for microwaved brussel sprouts with the family in Kent or Shropshire or somewhere else. Yep, we’re big fans of Christmas and we’re planning some particularly scrumptious seasonal treats for you. More on that nearer the time.

Over recent months, myself and some other local musicians have been plotting a new idea. We’ve sat huddled in darkened corners of various trendy pubs around the city, muttered to ourselves over Brooklyn Brewery products and caressed our unkept beards thoughtfully for seconds and sometimes minutes of deep contemplation. After some initially ill-thought out suggestions, such as founding a balloon factory; a mining company and a crystal meth dealing website, we decided a really good idea would be to create a new Brighton-based independent record label dedicated to releasing new albums from strange and interesting corners of the city’s creative underside.

As you can see, the name of this new label is Big Salad Records and you’ll be hearing lots more about it over the upcoming months, and hopefully years if our plans of global world domination come to fruition. In fact, remember that Christmas show I mentioned? It is a Big Salad Production. This website is being built by an army of above-average-levels-of-hardwork-ethic-imbued-ants as we speak. In the meantime, use your track pads and mice to hit Like on Facebook and Follow on Twitter and that way you’ll always be cool with the very latest announcements on Brighton’s newest and most exciting record label.

Not speaking of which, do you have your copy of our latest EP yet? The Panda Bear Song EP was released on Elefant Records in April 2011. If you don’t then head to their online shop now to pick up a copy! It’s on wondrous brown vinyl and has a nice lyric sheet inside, really very lovely, I promise.

And just in case you’ve been bolted up tightly in an industrial storage box in some basement for the last six months without a wireless internet connection, you can view the said video for aforementioned song by clicking the play button you should see below this paragraph (the preceding advert which may or may not appear was not made by us and really has nothing to do with the main feature that follows and so sorry about that):

ps. I almost forgot to mention that we have gig coming up soon too – it will be part of the Brighton Oxjam events. Check out http://www.oxjam.org.uk/oxjam for the latest announcements.

Big Hello!

Warm greetings to you – please accept a big hello from Big Salad Records! Today the doors officially open on Brighton’s newest record label, dedicated to releasing some great records for all the good people who have an interest in such things.
There’s a host of reasons to be excited about upcoming projects we’re planning for the near future, the first of which being our first ever release, a short LP entitled Balcony Times from the beautiful Milk & Biscuits. The dreamy, psychedelic folkisms of Matty Davies and Max Erle are a perfect introduction to the label’s musical sensibilities and we are proud to be releasing their wonderful debut record. A limited run of 100 hand-made CDRs and a full digital release of Balcony Times will be available from 5th December 2011. Check their artist page to listen to the preview track, “Rivers”.

Big Salad Records is also the new home of indie pop cum psychedelic folksters Foxes!. There’s a big announcement in the works for early next year, as Foxes! look forward to following their The Panda Bear Song EP, which was released on Elefant Records in April 2011.  There are also a host of live dates to look forward to, the first being a slot at the upcoming Oxjam gig at the end of October and a Christmas gig at The Green Door Store in December.

Don’t forget to follow Big Salad Records on Twitter and like us on Facebook, that way you will keep up-to-date on announcements. Exciting times.
