“Ragged, fast-paced indie pop, with strong songs and a beefy rhythm section that belies the off-ball keyboard riffs and laconic artless vocals up front.“
– Brighton Music Blog
Sarcastic is the debut single from brand new indie pop outfit, Octopuses. Formed by guitarist Adam Bell and multi-instrumentalist Alan Grice of similarly C86-indebted Brighton darlings Foxes!,the single is released through their own Big Salad Records.
After putting Foxes! on hiatus last year, Adam and Alan kept themselves busy playing with friends Alan Odgers and Tom Matthews over the summer, performing at open mic nights in their new hometown. They had a blast! And with that in mind they decided to make it into a fully-fledged project, adding Alan’s brother Rob Grice to the lineup and with the emphasis on an open-minded, DIY and fun approach.
With Tom taking up his new mantle as frontman, Adam hung up his guitar in favour of playing keyboards and along with Alan eased off the reins of their traditional songwriting roles to let the band write together more freely. This included being open to new influences, such as electronic and dance elements from Alan O, as heard in his solo MC Fashion project. It was also an opportunity for Adam to revisit his Britpop-infused youth with the likes of Space and Cake.
Sarcastic is the first fruits of their labour and the perfect expression of what they are about: a racing indie-pop mini-anthem of infectiously wry verses and a buoyant, singalong chorus. It’s got the sweetly fizzing synths of Pulp, the guitar chug and punch of Super Furry Animals and the British post-punk edge of Elastica and the homely eccentricity of Grandaddy. Really though, it’s just a bloody good pop song!
Recorded and mixed in their bedrooms, the single is released on Big Salad Records, a DIY label started by members of the band as well as others and which has already created a micro-community of like-minded people to encourage and support each others releases. As well as putting out the likes of Foxes! and Octopuses, the label are currently gearing up for the debut album release for Milk & Biscuits as well as half a dozen or so singles from new acts.
Octopuses are currently in the process of recording their first full LP, including three songs recorded at the same time as Sarcastic: an instrumental 80s surf song, an indie dance track with a creepy middle-eight and a psychedelic super-ballad about a girl who flies off into space. We can’t wait to hear them!

‘White Noise is a song of two halves, worlds apart stylistically, but forming an unexpectedly thrilling whole. Quite magnificent.’ – Unthought of, though, somehow
‘Out of nowhere the tranquillity is broken and things start getting a bit more rock and roll. The Belle & Sebastian esque aura is broken and the bass and lead guitar provide an energy that will knock your little summer straw hat right off.’ – First Song For Your Mixtape
So big news for Milk & Biscuits, who’s new single White Noise has been getting some amazing airtime on Radio 6, and premiered on Radio 1 last night! Here’s the video directed by Laurence Dean:

The reviews for Foxes! have been really great so far. Here’s a round up of what people have been writing:
“Well crafted, self aware pop…occasionally they go nuts and wig out like The Coral or Captain Beefheart…it’s fantastic” – Artrocker Magazine ****
“A world of winsome, delicately spiced indie pop…taken as a whole, the album’s lo-fi charm and mannered innocence is a winner” – Uncut Magazine ***
“Don’t be put off by the twee coating there is more to these cunning canids than meets the eye. From surprisingly dark subject matter to the occasional foray into rockier territory Foxes! is the first truly post-twee album.” – The 405 7.5 / 10
“This self-titled debut is enchanting, full, as it is, of concatenate jangly indie waxed tales, and minor kitchen-sink dramas.” –God Is In The TV ****
“Trying to distil the history of indie into one album is cunning… worth hunting down.” – Daily Star 7 / 10
“Foxes! offer a breath of fresh air within the indie pop music spectrum, through their captivating rhythms and simplistic, yet infectious melodies.” –Sound Revolution 8 / 10
“Few graces aside, Foxes! take almost every trick in the book and nauseatingly sugar dump them back out.” – This Is Fake DIY 4 / 10 (hmm can’t win ‘em all…)
